I am grateful to Lion Hudson and Baker Books, the publishers of this book, and in particular to Tim Dowley and Peter Wyart of Three’s Company for its design, and to Fred Apps, its illustrator.
I thank Matthew Smith, my study assistant from 2002 to 2005, for carefully reading the whole typescript and for making numerous suggestions for clarification and improvement.
Above all I am indebted to Frances Whitehead, who not only typed one more manuscript but in April 2006 completes fifty marvelous years as my omnicompetent secretary.
