Week 16: Images of the Messiah
Week 16: Images of the Messiah
One of the salient features of the Old Testament is its growing expectation of the coming Messiah. It began immediately after the fall. No sooner had Adam and Eve sinned than God announced his intention to save sinners and to do so through a descendant of the very person by whom sin had entered the world. From then on God’s promise of the Messiah became increasingly rich and varied. For example, he would be a prophet like Moses, a priest like Melchizedek, and a king like David—Calvin’s familiar trio of Prophet, Priest, and King. So, as we conclude our survey of the Old Testament, it seems appropriate to consider the main messianic images.
