Week 8: Joshua and the Judges
Week 8: Joshua and the Judges
Deuteronomy ends with the death of Moses. But before he died he laid his hands on Joshua, appointing him as his successor. At last, under Joshua’s leadership promise became possession as the Israelites entered into their inheritance in Canaan. Then as an old man Joshua challenged Israel to remain true to Yahweh’s covenant. Following Joshua’s death, throughout a period of nearly two hundred years, Israel was ruled by so-called judges, and the same monotonous cycle of backsliding, oppression, and deliverance kept repeating itself. Samuel was the last judge. He yielded to popular demand and appointed Saul king. Saul’s reign, however, was largely a disaster on account of his repeated unfaithfulness.
