Salmo 4
Verse 1
This is another example of David's common habit of pleading for the mercies of the past as a basis for the present favor. Here he revises his likenesses and finds comfort in them. It is not to be imagined that the one who he helped us with six problems and will leave us in the seventh. God does nothing for the half, and he will never stop helping us until we no longer need it. The manna will fall every morning until we cross the Jordan.
Observe that David speaks first to God and then to men. Certainly, we should all speak more boldly to men if we had a more constant conversation with God. He who dares to face his The Creator will not tremble before the sons of men.
The name by which the Lord is addressed here, 'God of my justice', deserves attention, since it is not used anywhere else in the Scriptures. It means: You are the author, the witness, the maintainer, the judge and the recompensator of my justice; to you I appeal from the slanders and judgments severe of men. Here is wisdom, let us imitate it and always carry the our process, not for the petty courts of human opinion, but for the supreme court, the Bank of the King ’ s Heaven.
You increased me when I was in danger. army trapped in a gorge, and hardly pressed by the enemy around. God descended the rocks and gave me space; he broke the barriers and placed me in a large place. Or we can understand it this way: God expanded my heart with joy and comfort when I was like a man imprisoned by sadness and sorrow." God is a comforter who never fails.
Have mercy on me. enemies destroy me, because of my many and great sins, However, I flee to your mercy, and I ask you to hear my prayer. and bring your servant out of his difficulties. The best of men needs mercy truly as much as the worst of men. All of the liberations of the saints, as well as the forgiveness of sinners, are the gifts free from heavenly grace.
Verse 2
In this second division of the Psalm, we are taken from the closet of prayer for the field of conflict. Observe the fearless courage of the man of God. He allows His enemies to be great men (for such is the meaning of the translated Hebrew words - sons of men), but still thus he believes they are foolish men and, therefore, reprimands them, as if they are just children. He tells them that they love vanity and seek the leasing, that is, to lie, empty fantasies, vain pretensions, false inventions.
He asks them how long they want to make their honor a joke, Is its fame a mockery? A little joy is too much, because they do they keep entering it? If they hadn't been long enough.
Is it time for your hesitation? Hadn't repeated disappointments convinced of Shouldn't the Lord 'The anointed one be defeated by all his slanders?
Did they want to play with their souls in hell and keep laughing until a quick revenge turned her joy into howls? In contemplation of its perverse continuation in its vain and deceitful searches, the psalmist pauses and solemnly inserts a Selah. Surely, we too we can stop for a while and meditate on the profound madness of the wicked ones, their continuation in evil and their certain destruction; and we can learn to admire the grace that made us differ and taught us to love the truth and the seek justice. The psalmist takes a solemn pause and inserts a Selah.
Certainly, we can also stop for some time and meditate on the deep madness of the wicked, their continuation in evil and their certain destruction; and we can learn to admire the grace that made us differ and taught us to to love the truth and to seek justice. The psalmist takes a solemn pause and inserts um Selah. Certainly, we can also stop for a while and to meditate on the profound madness of the wicked, their continuation in evil and their safe destruction; and we can learn to admire the grace that made us differ and taught us to love the truth and to seek justice.
Verse 3
'But know this.' Fools do not learn and therefore must repeatedly receiving the same answer, especially when it is a bitter truth that must be taught to them, namely: the fact that the the pious are the chosen of God, and are, by distinctive grace, separated and separated among men. The election is a doctrine that men do not renewed cannot endure, but, nevertheless, it is a glorious truth and well attested, and should comfort the tempted believer. The election is the guarantee of the complete salvation and an argument for success at the throne of grace. Who he who has chosen us for himself will surely hear our prayer. The chosen of Lord will not be condemned, nor will their cry be heard. David was king for divine decree, and we are the people of the Lord in the same way: let's go tell our enemies their faces, that they fight against God and destiny, when they strive to bring down our souls. Oh beloved, when you are on your knees, the fact that you are set apart like the treasure peculiar to God, must give you courage and inspire you with fervor and faith. "God "Will he not avenge his own elect, who cry out to him day and night?" Since that he chose to love us, he cannot help but hear us.
Verse 4
'Tremble and do not sin.' How many invert this advice and sin, but they do not tremble. Oh that men would follow the advice of this verse and they shared with their own hearts. Certainly, a lack of Thinking must be one of the reasons why men are so crazy. as much as to believe in Christ and to hate one's own mercies. Oh, that for a you see your passions would become calm and stay quiet, so that in so solemn silence could reflect on the past and meditate on its inevitability destination. Certainly, a thoughtful man can have enough judgment to discover the vanity of sin and the futility of the world. Stay, sinner precipitated, stay, before making the last jump. Go to your bed and think on your paths. Ask advice from your pillow and let the stillness of Night, I instruct you! Don't throw away your soul for anything! Let reason speak!
Let the clamorous world be so for a while longer, and may your poor soul he pleads with you to make the statements before sealing your fate and ruin him forever! Selah Oh sinner! pause while I ask you for a time in the words of a sacred poet, Sinner, is your heart at rest?
Is your chest empty of fear?
Aren't you the oppressed one to blame?
Doesn't your conscience speak in your ears?
Can this world give you happiness?
Can you chase away your sadness?
Flatterer, false, and vain; Tremble at the misery of the mundane!
Think, oh sinner, of your end See the day of judgment appear, There must be your spirit, Hear your just sentence.
Miserable soul, ruined and defenseless For the blood of a Savior is applied; He alone can make you whole.
Fly to Jesus, sinner, fly!
Verse 5
As long as the rebels had obeyed the voice of the last verse, they would now be crying, - "What will we do to be saved?" And in current verse, they are pointed to the sacrifice and urged to trust in the Sir. When the Jew offered a sacrifice justly, that is, in a manner spiritual, he established the Redeemer, the great expiatory Lamb of sin; there is, therefore, the complete gospel in this exhortation of the psalmist. Oh fishermen flee to the sacrifice of Calvary, and there they lay down all their trust and confidence, for he who died for men is the LORD JEHOVAH.
6. We now enter the third division of the Psalm, in which the faith of the afflicted find expression in sweet expressions of contentment and peace.
There were many, even among David's followers, who wanted to see instead to believe.
Oh! This is the trend for all of us! Even the regenerated sometimes groan. after the sense and vision of prosperity, and they become sad when the darkness cover everything good. As for the mundane, this is their incessant cry. "Who will show us something good?" Never satisfied, their mouths spread wide open are facing in all directions, their empty hearts are ready to drink in any delusion that the impostors might invent; and when these fail, they soon give in to despair and declare that there is no nothing good either in heaven or on earth. The true believer is a man of a very different mold. His face is not down like the animals, but up like the angels. He does not drink from the muddy puddles of Mammon, more than the source of life above. The light of God's countenance is enough for him.
This is your wealth, your honor, your health, your ambition, your ease. Givethis is it and he will not ask anything more. This is indescribable joy and full of glory. Oh, for more of the dwelling of the Holy Spirit, that our communion with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ can be constant and permanent! "It is better," said someone, "to feel God's favor for an hour in our repentant souls, who sat entire eras under the hottest sun that this world provides. Christ in the heart is better than corn in the silo or the wine in the tank. Corn and wine are just fruits of the world, but the light of God's countenance is the ripe fruit of heaven. 'You are with me', is a much more blessed shout than "Harvest at home". May my barn be empty, I am still filled with blessings if Jesus Christ smiles at me; But if I have the whole world, I am poor without it.
We must not fail to observe that this verse is the word of the righteous man. in opposition to the words of many. How quickly the tongue betrays the character! "Speak, so that I may see you!" said Socrates to a boy. just. The metal of a bell is better known for its sound. Birds reveal their nature by its music. The owls cannot sing the song of the lark, neither the nightingale can hum like the owl. Let's then weigh and to observe our words, so that our speech does not prove us to be foreigners and foreigners from the community of Israel.
Verse 8
Sweet Hymn to the Night! I will not sit to watch in fear, but I I will lie down; and then I will not stay awake listening to every rustling sound, but I will lie down in peace and sleep, for I have nothing to fear. Those who have the God's wings above him do not need another curtain. Better than screws.
And bars are the protection of the Lord. Armed men kept the bed of Solomon, but we don't believe that he slept more deeply. than your father, whose bed was the hard ground and who was haunted by enemies thirsty for blood. Note the word 'only', which means that only God was his guardian, and that, although alone, without the help of man, he was still in good condition, as he was "alone with God".
A quiet conscience is a good bed companion. How many of our sleepless hours can be traced back to our suspicious minds and disordered. They sleep sweetly, whose faith wavers to sleep. None pillow as soft as a promise; no blanket as warm How a secure interest in Christ.
Oh Lord, grant us this peaceful rest in you, that, like David, we may to lie down in peace and sleep each night while we live; and joyfully we can lie down in the appointed time, sleep in death, rest in God!
Dr. Hawker's reflection on this Psalm is worthy of being prayed and fed with sacred delight. We cannot help to transcribe it.
Reader! Let us never lose sight of the Lord Jesus while we read this Psalm.
He is the Lord our righteousness and, therefore, in all our approaches to propitiatory, let's go in a language corresponding to this that is called Jesus, our Lord of justice, while the men of the world, of the world they are seeking your main good, let's wish for your favor that transcend infinitely corn and wine, and all the good things that perish I do not use Yes, Lord, your favor is better than life itself: You cause them that you love to inherit the substance and fill all your treasures.
O gracious God and Father, You in such a wonderful way separated one in our nature for yourself? Did you really choose one of the people? Did you see him in the purity of your nature, as in every aspect, God you delivered as the pact of the people, and declared yourself well in it, because well that the my soul will also delight in him, and now I know that my God and my Father hear me when I call upon you in the name of Jesus, and when I look at him for acceptance for the love of Jesus! Yes, my heart is fixed, oh Lord, my my heart is fixed, Jesus is my hope and justice, the Lord will hear me, when I call, and from then on I will lie down in peace and endure in security in Jesus, accepted in the Beloved, for this is the rest with which the Lord makes the weary rest. And that is refreshing.
