Psalm 3
Verse 1
The poor, broken-hearted father complains about the multitude of his enemies: and if you turn to 2 Samuel 15:12, you will find it. it was written that "the conspiracy was strong; for the people it continually increased" with Absalom Lord, how they are increased that trouble me! exclamation mark to express the wonder of the disaster that startled and it left the fugitive father perplexed. Oh! I see no limit to my misery, for my problems have increased! There was enough at the beginning to me sink very low; but behold! my enemies multiply. When Absalom, my dear, is in rebellion against me, it's enough to break my heart; but behold! Aitofel has forsaken me, my faithful counselors.
They turned their backs on me; Look! my generals and soldiers have abandoned me my standard. "How they are increased that the honey problem" The problems they always come in flocks. Sadness has a large family.
Many are they who rise against me. higher than mine! Your numbers are too big for my calculation!
Let us remember here our memory of the countless army that besieges. our Divine Redeemer. The legions of our sins, the armies of demons, the multitude of bodily pains, the multitude of spiritual sorrows and All the allies of death and hell have united in battle against the Son of Man. Oh, how precious it is to know and believe that he has dismantled your armies and he trampled them in his anger! Those who would have troubled us, he was removed in captivity, and those who rose up against us, he lay down.
The dragon lost its sting when it shot at the soul of Jesus.
Verse 2
David complains before his loving God about the worst weapon of attacks from their enemies, and the bitterest fall of their afflictions. "Oh!" says David, "many are those who say of my soul: there is no help for him in "God". Some of his doubtful friends said this with regret, but his enemies rejoiced at this and longed to see his words proven by their total destruction. This was the cruelest cut of all, when they declared that their God had abandoned him. However, David he knew in his own conscience that he had given them some reason for this exclamation, for he had sinned against God in the very light of day. Then they launched their crime with Bathsheba on his face, and said: "Rise, bloody man; God has abandoned you and left you behind." Simei cursedhe insulted him to his face, for he was bold because of his supporters, once the crowds of the men of Belial thought of David the same form. Without a doubt, David felt that hellish suggestion of staggering. for your faith. If all the trials that come from heaven, all the temptations that they rise from hell, and all the crosses that emerge from the ground could be mixed and pressed together, they would not make such a terrible test as for what is contained in this verse. It is the most bitter of all afflictions. to be led to fear that there is no help for us in God. And yet, remember that our most blessed Savior had to endure this in the most deep degree when he cried out: "My God, my God, why have you "Did you abandon?" He knew very well what it was like to walk in the dark and not see. light. This was the curse of the curse. This was the absinthe mixed with gall.
Being forsaken by your Father was worse than being despised by men.
Surely we must love the one who suffered the bitterest temptations and trials for our sake. It will be a pleasant and instructive exercise for the loving heart to mark the Lord in His agonies, as He poured out here, for there is here, and in many other Psalms, much more of the Lord of David than from David himself. "Selah" This is a musical pause; its exact meaning is not known.
Some think it's simply a rest, a pause in the music; others say it means: "Raise the tension - sing louder - cast the melody on a higher key - there is a nobler question for thus, gathers his harps. must be caught again until the proper grip, and certainly the the strings of our hearts are becoming increasingly out of tune. Let the 'Selah' teach us to pray.
My heart can be tuned like the solemn sound harp of David.
At least, we can learn that wherever we see 'Selah', we should consider it as a note of observation. Let's read the passage that precedes and succeeds with greater seriousness, for there is certainly always something excellent when we are required to rest, pause, and meditate, or when we are obliged to lift our hearts in a grateful song.

Verse 3
Here, David confesses his trust in God. 'You, O Lord, are a' shield for me." The word in the original means more than a shield; means a brooch around, a protection that will completely surround a man, a shield above, below, around, without and within. Oh! what a shield is God for His people! He removes the fiery darts of Satan from. below and the storms of trials above, while, at the same moment, speak of peace to the storm within the chest. You are 'my glory'. David knew that, despite being neglected and disregarded by its capital, it still he should return in triumph, and by faith he looks to God as honoring him and glorifying Him. Oh by the grace of seeing our future glory in the present shame! Indeed, there is a present glory in our afflictions, if we could discern it; for it is not a petty thing to have communion with Christ in your sufferings. David felt honored when he ascended to the Mount of Olives, crying, with his head covered; because in all this he resembled the Your Lord. We have learned, in this regard, to glory in tribulations. also! "And the lifter of my head" - will still exalt me. Although I I hang my head in sadness, I will soon raise this with joy and gratitude. What a divine trio of mercies is contained in this verse!
Defender of the defenseless, glory for the disregarded, and joy for the the destitute. Indeed, we can very well say: "there is no other like the God of Jeshurun
Verse 4
'I cried out to the Lord with my voice.' Why does he say 'with the my voice?" Certainly, silent prayers are heard. Yes, but the good men generally think that, even in secret, they pray better in louder than when they emit no vocal sound. Perhaps, in addition, David thought this: "My cruel enemies cry out against me; they raise the voices and, behold, I raise mine, and my cry comes from above all of them.
They cry out, but the cry of my voice great anguish pierces the very heavens, and it is stronger and stronger than all your turmoil, for there is one in sanctuary that heard me from the seventh heaven and heard me leave its holy mountain.
Answers to prayers are sweet cordial for the soul. We need not fear. a gloomy world while we rejoice in a God who listens to prayer.
Here is another Selah. Rest a little, oh believer, and change the tension to a smoother air.
Verse 5
David's faith allowed him to lie down; anxiety would certainly have made him. kept on tiptoes, looking for an enemy. Yes, he was able to sleep, sleeping in the midst of the problem, surrounded by enemies. "Then he gives his beloved sleep." There is a sleep of presumption; God delivers us from that! There is a sleep from holy trust; God help us close our eyes! But David says that he also woke up. Some sleep the sleep of death; but he, although exposed to many enemies, he leaned his head on the chest of his God, he slept happy under the wing of Providence in sweet safety, and then woke up in safety. "For the Lord upheld me." The sweet influence of the Pleiades of promise shone over the asleep, and he woke up aware that the The Lord had preserved him. An excellent divine observed well - 'This the quietude of a man's heart through faith in God is a kind of work superior to the natural resolution of manly courage, for it is the operation graciousness of the Holy Spirit of God that sustains a man above the nature, and therefore, the Lord must have all the glory for it.
Verse 6
Dividing into his harness for the battle of the day, our hero sings: I will not be afraid of ten thousand people who have set themselves against me. my surroundings". Note that he does not attempt to underestimate the number or the wisdom of his enemies. He assesses them in the tens of thousands and sees them as hunters clever ones pursuing him with cruel skill. However, he does not tremble, but looking your enemy in the face, he is ready for battle. It may not there is a way to escape; they can surround me when the deer are surrounded by a circle of hunters; they can surround me from all sides sides, but in the name of God I will pass through them; or, if I stay in meio deles, eles não me ferirão; Eu serei livre na minha própria prisão.
But Davi is too wise to venture into battle without prayer; he, therefore, kneel down and shout out loud to Jehovah.
7. Your only hope is in your God, but this is such a strong trust, that he feels that the Lord just has to rise up and he is saved. It's enough. for the Lord to rise and all is well. He compares his enemies to wild beasts, and he declares that God broke their jaws, so that they could not harm him; "You broke the teeth of the wicked." Or else he alludes to the peculiar temptations to which he was exposed. They spoke against And God therefore struck them in the bone of the face. They seemed as if they devoured with their mouths; God broke their teeth, and let them say what If they wanted to, their toothless jaws would not be able to devour you.
Rejoice, oh believer, you have to deal with a dragon whose head is broken, and with enemies whose teeth are pulled from their jaws!
Verse 8
This verse contains the sum and substance of the doctrine.
Calvinist. Search the Scriptures, and you should, if you read it with a mind sincere, to be persuaded that the doctrine of salvation only by grace is the great doctrine of the word of God: "Salvation belongs to the Lord". This is a point we are fighting for daily. Our opponents They say: "Salvation belongs to the free will of man; if not to the merit of man, but at least to the will of man; but we maintain and we teach that salvation from the first to the last, in all its aspects, belongs to the Most High God. It is God who chooses His people. He calls them by His grace; He encourages them by His Spirit and sustains them by His power.
It is not of man nor of man; "not of him who wants, nor of him who runs, mas de Deus que se compadece." Que todos nós aprendamos esta verdade experimentalmente, pois nossa carne e sangue orgulhosos nunca nos will allow learning in another way. In the last sentence, the peculiarity and the specialty of salvation is clearly declared: "Your blessing is upon o teu povo". Thank you, eternal thanks to you!
