Ezra 7.6. 2Tim. 2.2. ‘The capital error’ (as Burnet observes in the conclusion to the History of his own times) ‘in men’s preparing themselves for that sacred function is that they read divinity more in other books than in the Scriptures.’ It is needless to allude to the great advantage resulting from the knowledge of the original languages of Scripture, and to the powerful motives that urge us to study them. Apart from the interest of this study—it is most desirable, amidst the conflicting opinions of commentators, to arrive at an intelligent and satisfactory judgment from our own resources.
