Song 1.8. ‘The result of Church principles being kept out of the view of our congregations is that many members of our church have no distinct consciousness of the church to which they belong. They lose all the benefit of church-union, church-sympathy, and church-discipline. They are isolated and independent beings, instead of being parts of a body, linked in holy partnership with fellow-pilgrims, “individually members one of another.” (Rom 12.5) Their hearts are not “comforted, being knit together in love.’” Bishop of Winchester’s Charge, 1837. Robert’s Call to the Church, p. 52. Some admirable remarks from Bishops Spratt and Bull on this subject may be found in the Clergyman’s Instructor, pp. 246, 309.
