Aug. de Doctr. Christian, iv. 5. ‘In the plainest text’ (as a good old writer observes) ‘there is a world of holiness and spirituality; and if we in prayer and dependence upon God sat down and considered it, we would behold much more than appears to us. It may be that, at first reading or looking, we see little or nothing, as with Elijah’s servant: he went out once, and saw nothing; therefore he was commanded to look seven times. What now? asks the prophet. “I see a cloud arising, like a man’s hand;” and by and by the whole surface of the heavens was covered with clouds. So you may look lightly upon a Scripture and see nothing; look again and you will see a little; but look upon it seven times; meditate often upon it, and there you shall see a light, like the light of the sun.’ Caryl on Job.
