Compare Isaiah 40.11.—as illustrated by the wise and tender condescension of his public Ministry, Mark 9.33. How remarkable is the contrast between the elementary character of his sermon on the Mount and his latter discourses, evidently adapted to a higher stage of Christian knowledge, and promising a still greater revelation of the gospel to his Church! John 16.12, 13. Yet it is important to observe that it was the same gospel in all its perfect integrity at first, as it was at the last—not modified or stripped of its native offensiveness—only more fully developed.
