§ 4. Moreover, εὐαγγέλιον, or εὐαγγελία, on the basis of the force of the word, is “good news.” Augustine (Contra Faust., bk. 2, ch. 6): “Surely all who know Greek even slightly interpret evangelium as ‘good news’ or a ‘good announcement.’ ” [Augustine] again (De C. D., bk. 18, ch. 35): “The evangelium is a good announcement.”
** Suidas: “The Gospel is the best news.” The Jews laugh at this word [i.e., εὐαγγέλιον] and wish it to be used contemptuously, as in גִלְיֹוןןֶוָא, “the deceit or wickedness of a book.” See Guido Fabricius, Lexicon Syro-Chaldaicum, on the root גְלָא. **
