Fifth, sacrifices in the Old Testament were for making satisfaction.
(V) “Sacrifices in the Old Testament were for making compensation and satisfaction.”
We respond. This wholly Jewish idea is a dream which the prophets reprehended many times. The sacrifices were a type of the unique propitiatory sacrifice which Christ would make on the altar of the cross, through whom the saints even of the Old Testament obtained the forgiveness of sins. What he adds about the merits of our own works will have its own place later [cf. On Good Works (Commonplace XX), §§ 87–133].
