Chapter 41 of 322

Second, Romans 1[:2]: “The Gospel promised beforehand through His prophets.”

Second, Romans 1[:2]: “The Gospel promised beforehand through His prophets.”

Second, Romans 1[:2]: “The Gospel promised beforehand through His prophets.”

(II) “Paul says in Rom. 1:2 that the Gospel was promised beforehand through the prophets. Therefore the Gospel was not preached by them but only announced.”

We respond. The word “Gospel” means the public proclamation that the Messiah has been revealed, a proclamation which began to be preached in the New Testament. “The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ; as it is written in Isaiah, the prophet,” etc. (Mark 1:1–2). Nevertheless the teaching about the grace of God and the remission of sins on account of the Messiah, which was promised in the Old Testament and revealed in the New, is one and the same in both Testaments. The manner of revelation and the temporal aspect do not change the subject itself.
