The internal impulsive cause of the decree of the Gospel.

The internal impulsive cause4 [προηγούμενον αἴτιον] of the Gospel decree is the immense mercy of God, the intercession of the Son of God, and the promise of satisfaction given in time, in which respect the admirable balance [temperamentum] of divine justice and mercy must be considered. It is due to His love that the Son has been established as our Mediator, and He is said to have reconciled us to God, which the weakness of our mind cannot grasp fully. Leo (Sermon 1, De jejun. decim. mens.): “In the works and judgments of God nothing is free from the truth of His justice; nothing is free from the compassion of His mercy.”
