What they say has been added to the Fourth Commandment.
What they say has been added to the Fourth Commandment.
§ 75. They say that the Fourth Commandment [Exod. 20:8] “has not been supplied with an addition but has been wholly abrogated” (p. 189).
We respond. Then it is false that Christ has added something to each commandment, for an abrogation is not an addition. It is also false that the commandment about the Sabbath has been wholly abrogated. For there must be a distinction between the moral and ceremonial matter of this commandment, the former of which is perpetual while the latter is temporary [χρονικόν] and is abrogated in the New Testament. There was a more detailed disputation about this whole matter in its own place [On the Law of God (Commonplace XV), §§ 123–42].
