The best possibility for when they might have met earlier is when Edwards had counseled Brainerd at the time of the Yale commencement in 1743, if Jerusha, then fourteen, had accompanied her father to New Haven. That is possible, but pure speculation. Driven as he was by spiritual concerns and desire to promote the mission, Brainerd would
