The Spirit and the Teaching: How the Didaché Continues
— Jude recalls Paul's anathema, rooting the church in the once-given faith Jude's language is fierce because the stakes are eternal. The faith was "once for all delivered." The Greek is hapax—once, never to be repeated. It is not delivered anew in every generation. It is guarded and heralded in every generation.
"Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints."
— Jude 1:3
Contending is not quarreling. It is not the love of argument. It is the love of the flock. Wolves do not announce themselves. They dress in doctrine. They use Christian vocabulary with a different dictionary. The call to contend is the call to clarity for the sake of charity. If we will not fight for the truth, we cannot love people with the truth. And a love without truth is not love at all.
It is sentiment without salvation.
The Spirit and the Teaching: How the Didaché Continues Some hear "finality" and fear rigidity. They imagine that because the canon is closed, the Spirit has gone silent. Nothing could be further from the promise of Christ. The closing of the canon is not the cessation of Christ's teaching. It is the concentration of it. The Spirit does not bring new doctrine. He brings deeper remembrance.
"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you."
— John 14:26
The Spirit's ministry is Christocentric and retrospective. He teaches by reminding. He illumines by opening the eyes of our hearts to what Christ has already revealed. He does not bypass the Word. He applies it. He does not compete with the Son. He glorifies Him. Any "spirit" that leads you away from the words of Jesus is not the Holy Spirit. It is another spirit entirely.
This is how the didaché continues. It continues in the church not through fresh revelations but through faithful proclamation, Spirit-empowered
