We See in a Mirror Dimly
speak of spiritual things. But they deny the power, they deny the cross, they deny the Lord who bought them.
We See in a Mirror Dimly Humility is essential in handling doctrine. We do not yet see fully. We do not yet know as we are known. Theological arrogance is a denial of our current condition. Even the Apostle Paul, with his revelations and insight, confessed the limits of his present sight.
"For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known." 1
Corinthians 13:12
This does not make doctrine uncertain. The mirror may be dim, but it is not deceptive. God has spoken clearly and sufficiently for life and godliness.
Yet our finiteness reminds us to hold our conclusions with conviction where Scripture speaks clearly, and with charity where it does not. The goal is not to win arguments; the goal is to win people to Christ. The goal is not to be proved right; the goal is to be found faithful.
What then is the call? It is the same call that has echoed from the apostles to every generation. Choose hugiaino didaskalia. Choose truth that heals.
