Choose Hugiaino Didaskalia
the word of His grace. It does not merely inform; it forms. It does not just describe a foundation; it lays one.
This is why the content of our teaching matters. The foundation determines the building. Later in the same chapter, Paul warns of teaching that has human origin and not divine.
"These are matters which have, to be sure, the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against fleshly indulgence." Colossians 2:23
Self-made religion looks wise. It sounds strict. It impresses the undiscerning. But it cannot sanctify. It cannot break the power of sin. It is not doctrine according to godliness. It is doctrine according to human preference, and it leaves the flesh enthroned. Only the words of His grace can deal with the flesh, because only they unite us to the death and resurrection of Christ.
Choose Hugiaino Didaskalia The New Testament uses a specific word for soundness in doctrine: hugiaino . It is a medical term. It means healthy, whole, wholesome, free from disease. Sound doctrine is healthy doctrine. It brings health to the soul,
to the family, to the church. Unsound doctrine is sick doctrine. It spreads like an infection and leads to spiritual weakness and death.
This is why Paul ties doctrine directly to godliness. The two are inseparable.
Teaching that does not promote godliness is not from God.
"If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness..." 1 Timothy 6:3
The standard is the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ. The result is a life conformed to godliness. Anything else is a deviation. James gives us
another test for the origin of teaching. Wisdom from above and wisdom from below produce different lives.
"But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic." James 3:14-15
Bitter jealousy, selfish ambition, arrogance—these are the fruits of earthly, natural, demonic wisdom. They may be taught in religious language, but their source is not heaven. In contrast, the grace of God trains us differently.
"For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age." Titus 2:11-12
Grace is not only a doctrine to be believed; it is a teacher. It instructs. It disciplines. It shapes. The words of His grace are not passive. They work in you. They command you to deny the old life and empower you to live the new. This is the great difference between demonic doctrine and divine
