Passing On the Didaché
The "teaching of the Lord" is the didaché tou Kyriou . Sergius Paulus was not converted by charisma but by doctrine. The structure, coherence, and authority of the teaching astonished him. This is how the didaché was guarded: by being taught with clarity and conviction that exposed its divine origin.
Passing On the Didaché Transmission is incomplete without succession. The apostles knew they were mortal. The didaché had to outlive them. Thus, Paul tells Timothy,
"and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also" (2 Tim 2:2).
Four generations are in view: Paul, Timothy, faithful men, and others also.
This is the apostolic model of discipleship. It is doctrine-driven and multiplication-minded.
The pastoral epistles reveal how this worked. Elders were appointed in every city. Their primary qualification was not managerial skill but doctrinal fidelity. They had to be able to teach (1 Tim 3:2). They had to hold to the trustworthy word as taught (Titus 1:9). The church was not built on personalities but on truth transferred from one reliable steward to the next.
This passing on occurred through several means. First, public reading and exposition of Scripture. Second, catechesis of converts. Hebrews 6:2 indicates that instruction in basic doctrines was standard for new believers.
Third, the ordinances. Baptism and the Lord's Supper are acted doctrine, portraying the gospel that the didaché articulated. Fourth, letters. The epistles of the New Testament are themselves examples of how the didaché was transmitted to churches the apostles could not personally visit. Fifth, worship. Paul tells the Corinthians that when they come together, "each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up."
What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up.
1 Corinthians 14:26
