2. Purification. The very essence of forgiveness is being restored to our original standing before God: "Purge me . . . and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow" (Psalm 51:7; see also Romans 4:7; 1 John 1:9).
When God forgives us and purifies us of our sin, He also forgets it: "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more" (Hebrews 8:12, NIV; see also Psalm 103:12; Isaiah 38:17).
3. Remission. Forgiveness results in God's dropping the charges against us. He will not enforce judgment because of our sins. Jesus said to the woman taken in adultery, "Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more" (John 8:11; see also Romans 8:1).
What a great privilege you have as you share with inquirers the joy of God's forgiveness!
Helping Strategy
We shall consider three areas: forgiveness from God, forgiving those who have wronged us, and forgiving ourselves by putting our past behind us. For the Non-Christian:
1. Reassure a nonbeliever by saying that God understands sin and knows how to deal with it. He forgives sin. And the inquirer, too, can know the joy of pardon.
2. Explain "Steps to Peace with God," page 11. Emphasize the "Results of Forgiveness" mentioned in the "Background."
3. Share "Assurance," page 15.
NOTE: If your inquirer insists that he or she can't be forgiven, having committed the "unpardonable sin," turn to the chapter on that subject.
4. Encourage him or her to start reading and studying the Bible. This will bring great reassurance of forgiveness (1 John 3:19). Ask if he or she would like to receive Living in Christ, which will provide a good starting place for Bible reading and study.
5. Recommend seeking fellowship with a group of Bible-believing Christians. A good church will provide Bible teaching, worship, and opportunities for service and witnessing as well.
6. Encourage daily prayer and confession (1 John 1:9) as a prerequisite for daily forgiveness and renewal.
7. Pray with him or her for a full understanding of commitment to Christ and its implications in everyday life.
