Most of the Gospels’ portraits of Jesus fit his Galilean milieu. He likely grew up in Nazareth and moved to Capernaum. We cannot infer from such a milieu that Jesus was extremely hellenized, that he was disloyal to the law, or even that he was predisposed toward revolution. From this milieu we can conclude, with the Gospels, that some of Jesus’ first disciples were likely fishermen. This Galilean Jew was not a Cynic and not likely a Pharisee (despite some shared common ground with Pharisees); he was, however, a sage, and plausibly a charismatic one.
