Chapter XXIV: Sin Remaining and Sin Remitted, § 106.
CHAPTER XXIV: ON SIN REMAINING AND SIN REMITTED
§ 106. Twentieth. Some sin is remaining sin; some is remitted. The basis for this division stands in John 9:41: “If you were blind” (if you had acknowledged your blindness and were to flee to find medication for your soul), “you would have no sin” (your sin would be forgiven you); “but now that you say that you see” (you do not acknowledge your illness nor seek medication), “your sin remains.” Thus remaining sin is every sin which is not remitted and about which Christ says to the Pharisees in the preceding ch. 8:24: “You will die in your sins.” Because remission of sins cannot be obtained or received except by faith in Christ, He adds: “Unless you believe that I am He” (the Light of the world, the only Mediator, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world), “you will die in your sins.” John 3:36: “He who does not believe in the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.”
