14: On Propositions in which Figments,to which Nothing in Reality Corresponds, are Posited

On Propositions Positing Figments 'Socrates is something' and 'Socrates does not have the wisdum which he ought to have'. Still, this is consistent with its being the case that he is able to have wisdom. Hence, the following propositions are compatible with one another: 'Socrates is foolish or stupid' and 'Socrates is able to be wise naturally'. But the following propositions are incompatible: 'Socrates is blind' and 'Socrates is able to see-naturally'. And so it is clear that the two propositions have different exponents, even though a privative term occurs in each.

Now the various ways in which such propositions should be expounded can easily be seen by taking the nominal definitions of the privative terms in question and formulating the exponents from them.
