CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

Whether All Should Receive in Equal Measure What Is Necessary

IT IS WRITTEN: “Distribution was made to everyone according as he had need.” (Acts 4:35). We do not mean to cite this in support of indulgent favoritism—God forbid—but rather because one should take into account infirmities. Let him who needs less thank God and not be sad, but let him who needs more be humble when he considers his weakness, and feel special for the indulgence shown him. If this is observed, all the members of the community will be at peace.

Above all, let not the evil of murmuring appear in the smallest expression or gesture for any reason whatever. If anyone be found guilty of that matter, let him be placed under very severe discipline.
