6. Does He Forget Mes
SOMETIMES I EXPERIENCED moments of great despair. I remember one night when I was outside the barracks on my way to roll call. The stars were beautiful. I remember saying, "Lord, You guide all those stars. You have not forgotten them but You have forgotten Betsie and me."
Then Betsie said: "No, He has not forgotten us. I know that from the Bible. The Lord Jesus said, 'Iam with you always, until the end of the world,' and Corrie, He is here with us. We must believe that. It is not what we are feeling that counts, but what we believe!"
Feelings come and feelings go And feelings are deceiving. My warrant is the Word of God, None else is worth believing.
I slowly learned not to trust in myself or my faith or my feelings, but to trust in Him. Feelings come and go—they are deceitful. In all that hell around us, the promises from the Bible kept us sane.
Ravensbruck certainly was a work camp. It was the enemy's plan to work us— to death! Before the war ended, ninety-six thousand women died there. Even my dear Betsie became an old woman before my eyes and slowly starved to death.
The smoke from the crematorium was like a black haze over the camp. Every day seven hundred women died or were killed. There were far too many of us, and death was the only solution to the problem. I looked death in the eye day after day, and I found the Lord to be my refuge still, my only hiding place.
