Reflecting on Christ's teaching about the mote and the beam (Matthew 7), Hession warns that a habit of pointing out others' faults while excusing one's own far greater ones disqualifies a person from actually helping anyone. Only after dealing honestly with our own “log” — our pride, harsh judgments, and unloving attitudes — can we see clearly enough to help a brother or sister with theirs, and even then only in humility rather than superiority.
