Hession pictures every believer as one of “God's water-carriers,” whose life is meant to be a cup filled with the Holy Spirit so that it overflows in blessing onto others. A cup that is already full of something else — bitterness, self-pity, touchiness, resentment — cannot also be full of the Spirit, however sincere a person's outward Christian activity may be. The chapter presses a practical question: what actually spills out of us under pressure, since that, more than our profession, reveals what really fills the cup.
