Taking the image of the Spirit descending on Christ at His baptism “like a dove” and remaining on Him, Hession argues that the Holy Spirit's power rests only where Christ's meekness and lowliness are present — the Dove will not remain where there is pride, harshness, or self-assertion. Effective service and “soul-winning,” he insists, flow not from technique, personality, or forcefulness, but from a humbled, Lamb-like disposition that the Spirit can rest upon.
