Rather than presenting holiness as a “second blessing” received once and possessed permanently afterward, Hession describes it as a highway walked one step at a time — a continual, moment-by-moment repentance and reliance on the finished work of the cross. He cautions against measuring spiritual progress by past experiences or by comparison with others, and calls instead for present-tense honesty about present-tense sin, however small it may seem.
