True fellowship, Hession argues, depends on “walking in the light” — being honestly open about sin with God and, where it has caused a breach, with the people it affects — rather than covering, excusing, or explaining it away. He warns against the common substitute of a vague, general confession that never actually deals with the specific thing that has broken fellowship, and calls readers to keep “short accounts,” dealing with sin as soon as it is seen rather than letting it accumulate into a wall.
