Week 41—SATURDAY

“HAS ANYONE TOLD YOU TODAY?”

We are looking at the Word become flesh as availability—now and anywhere for anybody. A young Dutchman became enamored of Eastern mysticism. He sat for fifteen days on a peak of the lower Himalayas gazing at the higher peaks and the eternal snows upon them. For fifteen days he fasted and meditated upon their eternal whiteness hoping that some of that purity would come within him. Nothing happened. Nature mocked him. His Bible was unopened beside him. He opened his Bible and the living Christ walked straight into his heart. The nature worshipers are always secondhand, this side of Reality.

A woman secretary was the point of tension in the office. Her boss said to her one day as she entered, “Has any one told you today?” “Told me what?” she replied. “That God loves you.” She broke down and wept, accepted the love of God in Christ, and is now the spark of life in that office.

A mathematician in an atomic center said to me with a tense eagerness, “All the kindling wood is laid, ready for the fire to burst forth.” When I saw him again he was on fire. He had applied the match of receptivity!

To be empty in the face of this Fullness is tragedy—and stupidity! A man who had never traveled went across the Atlantic and provided for his food—bananas and peanuts. He got tired of this diet and went to the steward to see if he could buy a good meal. Found to his amazement that all his meals had been paid for—in the ticket! He was like many—spiritually starved when all they need is paid for in Christ!

It’s all open—to the receptive. Two high school boys went to the altar and gave witness that they were saved. An old man got up, “Something is wrong here. I went to the altar eleven times before I was saved, and these boys got it in three minutes.” An old lady replied, “But they were not so stubborn.” “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth” (Matt. 5:5)—and salvation!

O Jesus, you are the Eternal Openness. So I take your forgiveness for my sin; your fullness for my emptiness; your victory for my defeat; your healing for my sickness; your strength for my weakness; your all for my nothingness. Amen.

AFFIRMATION FOR THE DAY: I am what my receptivity is, no more, no less.
