Week 38—FRIDAY
“HE WILL GUIDE YOU INTO ALL THE TRUTH”
To leave the Word become flesh means to run off “into a wilderness of words” to cover up the falsity. For when you leave the Word you turn to words—a wilderness of words.
How refreshing this is: “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. . . . He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you” (John 16:13-14). Here “the Counselor,” “the Spirit of truth,” not only reveals truths to you—“he will guide you into all the truth”—guide you into possession of the Truth. The Spirit guides you into the word becoming flesh in you. How different this is from the goal of “insight”—the word become word. This is not mere insight; it is the possession of Truth and possession by Truth—it is “into” and not around the edges of.
And the Truth into which the Holy Spirit guides us is the Incarnate Truth: “he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” He unfolds what is infolded in Jesus. This provides for a continuing revelation. The revelation is fixed in Jesus, but it is dynamic and unfolding by the Counselor, the Spirit of Truth, unfolding that fixed Revelation. It is therefore never outgrown. The more you see in it the more you see there is to be seen. It is fixed Goal, but is a flying Goal. You never catch up to it. And yet every moment you are caught by it.
This is why there is a freshness about Jesus which never dims. I go to my Bible every morning with a pen in hand expecting some fresh insight to come—an insight which I can note on a margin. And it seldom or never fails to come. You are striking deeper and deeper layers of truth all the time. This is a Divine Book, for it reveals the Divine Person. Out of the words arises the Word. This Book creates expectancy. I am satisfied and yet on the stretch. And I know there is no end to This. This is It and forever!
O Blessed Spirit of Truth, hold your torch before his face that I may see him more clearly. Then inspire me to love him more dearly and follow him more nearly. For I am mad after him. Make me more mad. Amen.
