Week 15—Wednesday 1 Peter 2:9-10
1 Peter 2:9-10
THE MEEK DOGS, CATS INHERIT THE EARTH
As we look at the question of the type that will survive, we must face the question of the survival of the types in evolution. We have been taught that nature is red in tooth and claw and that the fiercest or the most cunning survive. That conclusion seems to cut across the Christian conception that it is “the meek” which “will inherit the earth.” But a closer look at the process shows that this very thing is happening—the meek do inherit the earth.
They tell us that all dogs were once wolves. Somewhere along the line a wolf came around behind us and said: “I’ll not fight you; I’ll serve you.” The fierce wolf became the serving dog. Result? The fierce wolves are being slowly but surely exterminated everywhere in the world while the meek serving dogs are inheriting the earth—everywhere! And how!
All cats were once wildcats and survived by fierceness. But somewhere along the line one of those fierce cats came behind us and said: “I’ll serve you; I’ll be your friend and companion and I’ll rid your house of pests.” Result? The fierce cats—the tiger and the leopard, and wildcats in general are slowly but surely being exterminated while the meek cats are inheriting the earth—taking over our hearths and our hearts.
And while there is no probability or possibility to serve us, those types are being exterminated by the advance of science—mosquitoes, disease germs, cobras, poisonous vines, and weeds. The poisonous types are being eliminated, and the serving types are inheriting the earth—wheat, rice, oats, corn, flowers.
In the hard school of evolution it is the meek, serving types which are surviving, while the red-in-tooth-and-claw types, which are nonserving, are slowly but surely being pushed to the wall—exterminated.
O God, we thank you that your laws are one, whether in nature or human nature—the servant of all becomes the greatest of all. Help us then to apply your law to every day and in every way—help us to be the servant of all in every situation. In your name. Amen.
AFFIRMATION FOR THE DAY: If I am meek enough to receive, I will be great enough to survive.
