Week 15—TUESDAY

THE FITTEST TO SURVIVE

We are looking at the fact that the truth in karma is fulfilled in Jesus when he gives his life for us and lets us reap what he sowed. This opens the door upward for us. We become reborn persons as different from the ordinary person as the ordinary person is different from the animal. A new type of being comes into existence. This new type of being represents the revival of the unfit, now turned into the survival of the fittest. The Christian type of personality is turning out to be fittest to survive in the future. The Christian represents the serving type. The Christian becomes the greatest of all by becoming the servant of all. The serving meek will inherit the earth—the fittest to survive.

A Hindu governor of a state in India said to a Hindu doctor attending lepers: “You are doing a real bit of Christian service here. Thank you.” A Hindu telling a Hindu that he was doing a Christian service! The type of service represented by the truly Christian servant is turning out to be the standard. Among values, the Christian type is turning out to be the highest value. Truly Christian persons lose their life in lowly service and find it again as the head of the procession in the upward march of people. An American officer wounded by a mine left after the war found himself in a German hospital, lovingly attended by a German doctor and his wife. “Why do you do this?” he inquired. And the reply, “Oh, I see you are not a Christian, or you would know.” It led to his conversion, for he saw the most beautiful service he had ever seen—Christian service. Some Quakers were feeding people in Poland. A Polish woman asked: “You feed everybody?” “Yes.” “Germans?” “Yes.” “Russians?” “Yes.” “Jews, Atheists, Communists?” “Yes.” She thoughtfully replied: “Well, I thought there ought to be people like that in the world, but I didn’t know there were.” That type is the survival type—the fittest.

O Lord and Savior, we thank you that you, the lowly Galilean, are now at the right hand of final authority. You have proven that your type is the type that is fittest to rule. For you are the Servant of all. Give us your spirit of lowly service this day. Amen.

AFFIRMATION FOR THE DAY: Soul of mine, listen to this: You will be great only as you greatly give yourself.
