CHAPTER 31: Pope Agatho’s answer
CHAPTER 31
Pope Agatho’s answer
THE most holy and thrice blessed Agatho, Bishop of the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church of the city of Rome, replied thus: ‘It has been a great source of satisfaction to realize, as the petition was taking its course, that Bishop Wilfrid, God’s beloved, did not let his belief that he had been unjustly ejected from his see drive him into contumacious opposition, to meet, as the world would, force with force. Rather did he humbly bethink himself to seek the canonical remedies from our holy founder, St Peter, the Prince of the Apostles. Moreover he meekly awaits the decision, promising prompt obedience without cavil, vowing wholehearted assent to whatever Peter, whose office we perform, shall declare through our lips.’
