CHAPTER 30

He cures a girl of pains in the head and side by anointing her with oil

HERE is another miracle similar to the last and testified to by many eyewitnesses, among whom there is the holy priest Aethilwald, one of Cuthbert’s retinue at the time and now abbot of Melrose.

Cuthbert was making his usual preaching mission through the villages and had come to one where there were a few nuns. They had fled from their own monastery for fear of the barbarian army shortly before, and had been lodged in the village by Cuthbert. One of them, a relation of Aethilwald, was seriously ill, seized with pains in the head and all down one side, so that the doctors had given her up. Cuthbert’s companions pointed this out to him and begged him to heal her. Full of pity for her wretchedness he anointed her with holy oil. She began to improve from that very moment and in a few days completely recovered.
