CHAPTER 23

HE died shortly after the ninth hour on Friday, 25 September, in the seven hundred and sixteenth year from the incarnation of Our Lord, on the sixth day of the week just after the ninth hour in the meadows just outside Langres. He was buried the next day to the south of the city, at the first milestone, within the monastery of the Three Brother Martyrs, in the presence of a vast concourse of people who came and sang the psalms – not only the English men who had come out with him, but also monks from the monastery and the inhabitants of the town. The three martyrs in whose monastery he lies buried are Speusippus, Eleusippus and Meleusippus.2 They were triplets and not only delivered from the same womb but also born again together in the one faith of the Church, they and their grandmother, Leonilla, with them. They left behind them a memorial of their martyrdom worthy of the spot. May their kindly intercession help and protect ourselves, all unworthy as we are, and our father Ceolfrith.
