Monday: Manifestations of a Cleansed Subconscious
WEEK 16
MONDAY
MANIFESTATIONS OF A CLEANSED SUBCONSCIOUS
2 Corinthians 4:2-6
We have seen that the disciples were cleansed at the place of the subconscious by the Holy Spirit. How do we know that? Well, of course, only by implication. We see that the driving urges—self, sex, and the herd—that reside in the subconscious mind were now functioning constructively and redemptively and freely. We therefore imply that some power is working in the subconscious. That power is obviously the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, “you will know them by their fruit” (Matt 7:20). And by their fruit we know these men and women. They were not tense, anxious, strained, holding down something within. They were free, joyous, and natural. They were “letting nature caper.”
Take this passage as revealing the amazing steadiness of the inner life of these Christians: “They had them beaten. They ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, then let them go. The apostles left the council rejoicing because they had been regarded as worthy to suffer disgrace for the sake of the name. Every day they continued to teach and proclaim the good news that Jesus is the Christ, both in the temple and in houses” (Acts 5:40-42). Note the victory at the place of self: “they had them beaten. . . . The apostles left . . . rejoicing.” Not resentful or full of self-pity, they left “rejoicing because they had been regarded as worthy to suffer disgrace for the sake of the name.” The self was under divine control. Take the sex, or creative, instinct: “They continued to teach and proclaim the good news that Jesus is the Christ.” Pressure and threats could not suppress the creative urge. Take the herd urge: they “ordered them not to speak. . . . Every day they continued . . . both in the temple and in houses.” They were entirely emancipated from the herd pressure represented in the council.
How could these men be so free in the outer manifestations if they were not free in the inner? The manifestations were cleansed, so we must take it for granted that the men were cleansed. So we are driven to the conclusion that the Holy Spirit had cleansed, coordinated, and consecrated the subconscious.
O Holy Spirit, you cleanser of the depths, we offer to you now our depths for you to cleanse. Brood over our depths and bring order and harmony out of them. Amen.
AFFIRMATION FOR THE DAY: Out of my good store—my cleansed subconscious—I shall bring forth good.
