Tuesday: The Four Uses of Sex

WEEK 15

TUESDAY

THE FOUR USES OF SEX

1 Corinthians 7:32-35

Just how did it happen that the book most filled with the Spirit of God is the book least filled with the problems of self and sex? Is it cause and effect? Yes.

What is the remedy for the dominance of sex urges within us? We cannot act as though they are not there. They are in every normal person, and they are an integral part of us and intended to be. We cannot ignore them; they come back stronger or disguised as various neuroses or illnesses. You cannot suppress them by sheer willpower and strength. Like a suppressed spring the reaction is stronger than ever.

These people got rid of sex dominance not by tense striving but effortlessly They did with sex what they did with self: they surrendered it to God. Then God took it over, not by sitting on a throne and ordering sex to be subservient, but by coming into the subconscious and taking over sex at its source. The Holy Spirit is God working within and in the deepest within—the subconscious. There the Spirit doesn’t deal with the manifestations of sex, but with sex itself. God takes it over, cleanses sex from sexuality. Sexuality is perversion, perversion of the natural to the unnatural. The Spirit cleanses from perversion and brings sex back to its intended uses—intended by the Creator. These uses are four: (1) Sex was intended to help us to love; (2) through that love to set up a home. That home is intended primarily for fellowship. Sex when used properly augments that fellowship. (3) Procreation, which in turn produces the love of parents for a child; (4) for creative activity within the home or apart from it. The sex urge is the creative urge. It can physically create, or it can spiritually create, or both.

Suppose one has no home with a life partner, is he frustrated? Hardly. The two men who left the greatest creative impact on human living in any age, anywhere, were Jesus and Paul. They were both without homes, both unmarried. They weren’t querulous, crotchety, frustrated; they were adjusted and creative, amazingly so. So the sex urge can be creative apart from and beyond physical manifestation.

O Lord, I thank you that you have provided for continuous creation through us, making us creative clear up to the end of life, and beyond. I thank you. Amen.

AFFIRMATION FOR THE DAY: My creative urges will become more creative because surrendered to the Creator.
