34. To The Monk Gundulf.

The Letters of St. Anselm

regards his headache I ask you particularly that at your in sistence our beloved friend, Dom Albert, should examine him and as far as he can, with God's help, relieve him. c. 1073.

NOTES 1. See Epp 69, 74.

34. TO THE MONK GUNDULF.

Anselm begs Gundulf because of their close love and friendship, to take care of Maurice and have his headache treated by Albert the physician.

TO DOM GUNDULF: BROTHER ANSELM.

DID I NOT KNOW that I was everything to you and that you were everything to me, I would thank you for your gifts.

But since everything you have belongs to me and every thing I have is yours1, when you give me what belongs to you, why should I bow to you [in gratitude] when I am ac cepting not things belonging to somebody else but what are already mine?

If you regard yourself as another Anselm, not by merits, in which you surpass me, but through our mutual love, let this beloved brother and son of mine, Dom Maurice, ex perience this.2 I entreat you, by showing care for him in all things for the sake of the love of God and your neigh bor, to show our love to him in my place. As for his headaches, I beg you as earnestly as I can, that through your prayers and help, as much as you can give, he may be cured by our lord and friend Albert, the physician, if it is possible. c. 1073.
