The Letters of St. Anselm

111. TO HIS COUSIN

FULCERALD.

Anselm informs his cousin Dom Fulcerald that in the serious matter of chang ing his monastery he cannot rely on oral information alone. He needs Abbot

Henry's written and sealed consent of release before receiving him at Bee.

TO HIS DEAREST BROTHER IN CHRIST, HIS KINSMAN IN THE FLESH,

FULCERALD1: BROTHER ANSELM SENDS GREETINGS.

IF DOM ABBOT HENRY IS PREPARED to grant you to our church in perpetuity2—for I advise you not to come other wise, since it is neither proper nor easy for a monk to set out and then to return on so long a journey—, you should have insisted that he inform me of this by his letter and seal as I ordered, so you are not forced, poor man, to toil on such a journey in vain. It is not fitting for me to initiate such an action merely on the word of such an unimportant fel low. I advise you, therefore, either to send a letter with the seal of the afore-named Dom Abbot, as I have said, or to renounce entirely what cannot be done at all and to com mit the whole disposition of your life to divine mercy.

The same time as Ep 110.
