The Letters of St. Anselm

147. TO PRIOR BALDRIC AND

THE OTHER BROTHERS OF BEC.

Anselm, on his third visit to England, informs his community at Bee about the progress of his journey and that his return is being delayed by the king. He asks them to send him certain of his works and letters.

TO THOSE HE LONGS FOR AND WHO LONG FOR HIM,1 TO DOM

PRIOR BALDRIC2 AND THE OTHER BROTHERS WHO ARE WITH HIM:

BROTHER ANSELM,ENTIRELY THEIRS, WISHING THEIR WELL-BEING

ALWAYS, BOTH WITHIN AND WITHOUT.

I AM NOT YET ABLE to tell you anything about the benefit of our journey to England insofar as it affects our church.

The king3 is still delaying to reply to our petition, although he himself and the other nobles of England are showing me love and honor far beyond my expectations.

As regards our well-being, the bearer of this letter, a monk of Dom Abbot Gilbert,4 will be better able to inform you than our letter. I want you to receive him most kindly. I have no hope of being able to return before Lent.5 Inform me by letter about matters concerning you which you know

I ought to know about.

Send me the 'Prayer to Saint Nicholas'61 wrote, and the 'Letter against the Propositions of Roscelin' I had started writing7; and if Dom Maurice8 has any other letters of ours which he has not sent, send them as well. Greet our mothers

Lady Eva and Lady Basilia.9 Farewell.

Autumn/winter 1092.
