107. TO BISHOP G.

Anselm thanks Gundulf, Bishop of Rochester, for his prayers and his promise of help and begs him to assist Dom Richard.

TO HIS LORD AND FATHER, THE REVEREND BISHOP G.1: BROTHER

ANSELM, STYLED ABBOT OF BEC, WISHING HIM TEMPORAL

PROSPERITY AND ETERNAL BLISS.

WE GIVE THANKS TO YOUR HOLINESS who, having been entreated by our prayers and those of our brothers, deigned to grant us yours through our beloved brother Dom

Riculf,2 and to promise the help of your kindness whenever the opportunity should present itself. Since we have far too little to be able to repay you worthily, we ought so much the more to give all we can to the service of your highness both by deed and by will; we pray God for whose sake you promised us this, that he may repay you according to his abundant generosity, something we are not able to do be cause of our poverty.

As regards your son, our brother Dom Richard,3 although he has behaved quite honorably to us and we prefer rather to serve than to request anything, nevertheless we beg your kindness, since the matter demands it, that, if he should request anything of you or your prebend, you may grant him, for the sake of our love, what is not unbecoming to your honor. c. 1077-93.
