WE ARE THINKING about the power from on high which can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. We fastened on astrology as that power which can separate us—and does. When people lose the guidance of God, they will turn to anything for guidance. Of all the things men turn to for guidance, astrology is the most devastating, for it means that moral considerations have been abandoned, and the position of the stars decides. Stars that have no consciousness, no moral sense, no intelligence, decide the destiny of conscious, moral, intelligent beings. Any nation or any individual who adopts that method of guidance will decay, has already decayed. Yet we are told that five million people in America decide their daily lives on the basis of astrology. The newspapers that publish these daily charts are contributing to this moral and intellectual decay.
I have seen the royal houseboat tied up to the bank of a river in Kashmir, India, because the astrologers had informed the Maharaja that the stars were not propitious for a continuance of the journey. The business of a state tied up till the stars gave them permission to move! An educated Hindu said to me, “I was about to take a train journey, but I found it was not a propitious hour to journey, but the next one would be; so I waited an hour, rushed to the station, but, alas, the train pulled out without me.” It was a propitious hour, but he missed his train! The train of human progress will pull out and leave the devotees of astrology behind as they study their charts for propitious hours and days to do this, that, and the other.
The stars, which the love of God has made, can separate us from that love if we make the stars our guide instead of letting the Creator revealed in Christ guide us. It is the sin of idolatry. It is paganism, pure and simple.
Dear Lord, forgive the sin of turning to the stars instead of to the Savior, the sin of turning to the work of Thy hands instead of to Thy Hands for guidance and direction. May this sin of idolatry be forgiven us. Save us from things that separate us from Thee. Amen.
AFFIRMATION FOR THE DAY: Jesus is my Morning Star, ushering in my day—the day of God!
