In Whom We Are Hid All the Treasures

THEN THIS: “THAT their hearts may be encouraged as they are knit together in love, to have all the riches of assured understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, of Christ, in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col. 2:2–3). “Hearts may be encouraged as they are knit together in love.” The contrary is true—hearts are discouraged if the attempt is made to knit them together in anything but love. This works automatically.

“To have all the riches of assured understanding”—some understanding is not assured understanding. Pagan psychiatry is based on understanding, but it has no assured understanding, since the understanding is not grounded in God. Assured understanding comes when you feel that the sum total of reality is behind you, backing you—you have cosmic support.

You get this by having “the knowledge of God’s mystery, of Christ.” This is interesting; Christ unfolds the mystery of God, and God unfolds the mystery of Christ—a double unfolding. In both directions, the more you know, the more you know you don’t know. What you know sets you on fire to know more. It is therefore not static, but dynamic.

“In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Jesus Christ is the revelation of God and man and life, but He is a hidden revelation—He reveals and He conceals. You know, and you don’t know; you see, and you don’t see. What you don’t know and don’t see stirs you to perpetual discovery. This perpetual discovery becomes the most exciting thing in life. It keeps you on your toes, for you feel there is something big just ahead. This unfolding revelation of Christ puts a surprise around every corner, makes life pop with novelty and discovery, makes life living and worth living. The life in Christ is perpetual discovery and perpetual development.

O Lord Jesus, I know Thee, and what I know of Thee sets me on fire to know more and more and more of Thee. This perpetual discovery of Thee will go on forever, for Thou art inexhaustible. We will never go beyond Thee. I thank Thee. Amen.

AFFIRMATION FOR THE DAY: I’m on the most exciting treasure hunt in the world—the treasures hid in Him.
