Mystery of His Will

ANOTHER EPHESIANS VERSE: “For he has made known to us in all wisdom and insight the mystery of his will, according to his purpose which he set forth in Christ” (Eph. 1:9). This verse is important in that it shows how God makes known the mystery of His will. He makes it “known to us in all wisdom and insight.” In verse 17 Paul linked “a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him.” Here instead of “revelation” he put “insight.” The revelation is there in the latter portion of the verse: “which he set forth in Christ.” The revelation is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ is God’s will become legible. The will of God became flesh and walked and talked, lived and died, and rose again. Jesus is God’s will, not spelled out, but lived out. And God’s will looked at through Jesus spells out, “God is love.” Now how do we have this “mystery of his will” unfolded to us? By dictation? By special revelation? No, it is by studying and brooding over the New Testament as it unfolds Jesus Christ. As we do, we get wisdom. All knowledge apart from Jesus is foolishness, unless it is used in His way. Jesus is knowledge turned wise; it is “in all wisdom.” It is not merely religious wisdom; it is all wisdom. It is the wisdom that knows how to live, how to think, how to feel, how to act, how to be! It is wisdom that is wise and only wise.

Then this wisdom is gained through insight. In Jesus the Incarnate we have the sight. In thinking about Him and meditating and acting according to that sight we have insight—insight into its meaning. Its wonder unfolds. The sight is exciting, but the insight is just as exciting; it is a growing wonder as deeper meanings unfold, larger vistas are seen, and the eternal sweep of it is revealed. The will of God unfolded in Jesus is the most beautiful thing in this universe.

O God, I stand lost in wonder, love, and praise as I see Thy will unfold in Thy blessed Son. That will means well, and it means to make me well. It is not only good, it is redemptive. I love that Will, for it is Love. Amen.

AFFIRMATION FOR THE DAY: The will of God is my highest interest, always, in everything and everywhere—no exception!
