AS WE COME to our last day together, we find ourselves singing the song the redeemed sing on Mount Zion: “They sing the song of Moses . . . and the song of the Lamb” (Rev. 15:3). We can sing the song of Moses now, for the law is no longer a club held over us; it is a law written in our hearts—we love to fulfill it for we love Him. The law has turned to love. We can sing about the fulfilled law because we believe in and belong to Him who is the Lamb—the One who offered Himself to redeem us. We sing, not because we are worthy, but because He is worthy; we sing, not because of what we have done, but because of what He has done. “Worthy is the Lamb” is our theme song.
Because our song is based on His worthiness it is an incorrigible song. It must be sung or the stones would cry out. An illustration of this incorrigible song, in spite of, is Sarah Perkins, a white-haired missionary who spent five years in a communist prison in China, thirty-seven months in solitary confinement. She summed it up in these luminous words, “I was not a prisoner of the communists—I was a prisoner of Jesus Christ.” Out of that fact she began to sing. The communists forbade it. Then she whistled, and they forbade that. Then she hummed, and they forbade that. Then she hummed to herself under quilts. She memorized the whole Gospel of John with a light hidden under quilts. That humming under quilts has been heard in all the world, and that light hidden under quilts is lifted up in all the world. The humming has become a hymn of victory, and that smothered light lightens our pathway to victory!
The French have a saying that “no one can sing unless he sings out of a broken heart.” We sing because our broken hearts have been mended, our broken lives remade. We sing because we are in Him—the Redeemer.
O Lord Christ, our Redeemer, we sing because there is literally nothing else to do. It is the only appropriate thing to do. If blows fall they beat the glory out. We sing “in spite of” when we cannot sing “on account of.” We sing “Jesus is Lord!” Lord of everything. Amen and Amen.
AFFIRMATION FOR THE DAY: My creed and my song are one—my creed: “Jesus is Lord”; my song: “Jesus is Lord!” I’m in Him and He is in me. Hallelujah!
