Receptivity and Response

WE ARE MEDITATING on the fact that in every way we are enriched in Him. Note the “in every way.” If that means anything it means that the life, here and hereafter, is enriched in Him. It does not mean, as some suppose, that the present life is to be impoverished in order for heaven to be gained. It means that everything Jesus touches He enriches. He is Life touching life and enriching it.

The New Testament teaches that “in him all things were created . . . all things were created through him and for him” (Col. 1:16). If all things were created by Christ and for Christ, then when we surrender a spoiled creation to Him, He recreates it, and in recreating it, enriches it. He enriches the mind by cleansing away alien thinking, gives it single-pointedness and direction, and drives it toward great ends. The mind is enriched; the soul is enriched. It is cleansed from contradictions and conflicts, the wanting of mutually exclusive things, and is filled with a single loyalty and love. The body is enriched, for many of the diseases that afflict the body are passed on to it by sicknesses in mind and soul. Since the mind and soul are enriched, the body inherits that enrichment. The total personality is enriched. Since mind and soul and body are now one in purpose and loyalty, the total personality working as a well-oiled and smooth-running unit is a rhythmical and harmonious and impressive person. He gets things done, for he knows how to receive.

An organism can expend only what it receives, so the person knowing the secret of active receptivity takes from Him and expends on others. He knows the secret of receptivity and response. Since he is rich in resources, he is rich in response and becomes rich in his very self in the process.

O Jesus, Thou art rich, for in Thee the divine fullness dwells and when we are in Thee and only in Thee, then all those riches are ours for the taking. We are rich in Thy riches and full in Thy fullness. Amen.

AFFIRMATION FOR THE DAY: I am rich in inner unity and outer direction, and rich in power to hold to both.
