APPENDIX 2

3. but regarding the fruit of the tree in the middle of Paradise, God said, 'You shall not eat of it nor shall you touch it, lest you die.'

4. Et dixit serpens mulieri: Non morte moriemini.

4. And the serpent said to the woman, "You will not die the death.

5. For God knew that on the day on which you would eat of it your eyes would be open, and you would be like gods, knowing good and evil."

6. And the woman, seeing that the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eyes and a delight to behold, took of its fruit and ate; and she gave some to her husband, and they ate.

7. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they perceived that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

8. And they heard the voice of the Lord God as He walked in Paradise in the late afternoon, and then Adam and his wife hid themselves from the face of the Lord God amidst the trees of Paradise.

9. And the Lord God called Adam and said to him, 'Adam, where are you?"

9. Et vocavit Dominus Deus Adam et dixit illi: Adam, ubi es?

10. Adam replied, "I heard Thy voice as Thou wert walking in Para-

10. Et dixit ei: Vocem tuam audivi deambulantis in paradiso et timui, quia nudus sum, et abscondi me. dise, and I was afraid because I am naked, and I hid myself."

11. The Lord God said to him, ''Who told you that you were naked but that you have eaten of the one tree whereof I had commanded you not to eat?"

12. Et dixit Adam: Mulier quam de-

12. And Adam replied, "The woman whom Thou gavest to be my companion gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate." disti mecum haec mihi dedit a ligno, et edi.

13. Then the Lord God said to the woman, "What is this that you have done?" And she replied, '"The serpent beguiled me, and I ate."
