(2) Disciplining .
(2) Disciplining. If God is present with us everywhere, let us be careful that in the presence of His absolutely pure and holy eyes, which are brighter than the sun in infinite ways, which are “ten thousand times brighter than the sun and which look upon all the ways of men and perceive even the hidden places” (Sirach 23:[19]), I say, let us be careful not to commit sins, for they are works of darkness. No roofs, no walls, no subterranean caverns exclude His presence. He is more intimately present with us than we ourselves are. Why, then, do we not revere His presence and by meditating on it keep away from sin? “Walk
before Me,” that is, “in My sight,” God said to Abraham (Gen. 17:1), “and be perfect.” Ponder the fact that I am present with you everywhere; that I look upon your life, your actions, and therefore all your thoughts. Be perfect, then, a stranger to every hypocrisy, etc. Jer. 23:23[–24]: “Can anyone hide himself in secret places so that I do not see him? says the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? Am I God at hand and not far off?” Quite often we commit things in darkness that we would be terrified to do in the presence of an honorable man. But God is present everywhere. No one can hide anything from Him nor deceive Him. Therefore what happens that His presence does not strike terror in us and does not instill a cautious concern to avoid sin? Augustine, on Psalm 136: “He is all eye, because He sees all things. He is all ear, because He hears all things. He is all hand, because He does all things. He is all foot, because He is present everywhere.”
